That depends on the weight of the gold coins. And as we all know money in Arcanum doesn't weigh anything. That leaves the conclusion that it's all free. :p

Since you mentioned revolvers, and Arcanum is based upon a quasi-Victorian world, find out what the cost of a revolver - Colt, for example - would have cost in 1885 and compare it to the price of a generic Arcanum revolver that costs 140 gold.

Of course it wouldn't really be a fair comparison since, the dollar was backed by gold in 1885 and was therefore real money. Whereas today it's not and it's just an I.O.U. form the government. But yes it's probably more than good enough. :)

Something I just remembered - There was a western that came out not too long ago where the hero bought a good-condition used single-action navy revolver for 30 dollars.

Of course that was just a Hollywood script, but given the other prices from that era, it could be realistic.

I'm going to assume the most reasonable equivalent to a normal revolver found in a gunsmith's shop is a Colt 1851 Navy Revolver. They were pretty much everywhere in the US in the 1880's, and that made them cost very little. I'm thinking that 140 gold would essentially be a conversion to 450-500 dollars in 2001's money. Considering that one dollar in 1885 was about $18 in 2001, and a used navy colt was 25 to 30 dollars, it makes sense to me.
So, basically, one gold in Arcanum money is anywhere from 3 to 4.3 dollars. Or something.

Simple division: 140/30=4.666666..... and so on.
Go for easy figuring and just call it 4.50 dollars to 1 gold.
    Close enough.

Except that some schmuck gives you a hundred and fifty gold to fish his wedding ring out of the sewer for him. That would be about six hundred dollars.

This guy must love his wife very much. D:
