    Newbie question for those of you who have at least been through the game once: It seems to me the game would be awfully difficult if you played a character with poor or without melee skill. Typically in an RPG, one would view mages as druids as rear line type of characters although in my experience so far, Arcanum does not really permit such options. Enemies close the gap so fast that everyone is required to fight on the front line. This is my first time through and I am playing a dwarf (firearms/explosives) because it seemed simple enough to play a fighter. However, with more experience, I will certainly diversify by playing others classes and just wanted to know if a straight mage was possible. thanks.

    Some players consider straight mages to be overpowered compared to other types of characters.

    Aside from ranged and not-so-ranged attacks they have the physical enhancement spells for melee.

    BTW, to keep foes from closing the gap to fast initiate combat as soon as they see you and start heading your way.

    well

    i just have all my followers fight for me. i have zero (actually.. like negative (background) melee skills. i have 7 followers thou... all good , all magic/neutral base. really, i just played the course of a mediator, lots of beauty/cha/will/con, some int, lots of magic powers, haggle and persuasion... facilitated everything and let others take care of my probs for me, although, if i played turn based i could solo (max stasis line, max teleport line, max dominate will line, max earth line (str and direct damage) and a little black for the talk to the dead option.

    @Dakun,

    How did you get will/con/be/cha all up to 20. It seems like that would take every CP you earn per level in the game to get there? Do you reach a point where you start to earn more than one character point per level.

    you get 2 every 5 levels.
    but as he stated he has no abilities, since he has others to do his dirty work for him.

    Even without followers, a high magickal aptitude plus some more points for defense can make a mage powerful.
