Shark fin soup!?! :x Do you know how cruel that is? They pull the shark up out of the water, cut off its fin, and toss it back in. That's barbaric, if you ask me. I can deal with some other foods, but that one really gets to me. Poor shark.

On a side note, I love chinese.

KFC Customer Gets Pot With Chicken

An employee at a fast food place was arrested after a customer at the drive-in window received the wrong side order with his chicken dinner Ã¢â‚¬â€ some pot.

The customer who visited a KFC in this San Francisco suburb Friday got two bags of marijuana, instead of the extra biscuits he had ordered. He gave the pot back to the worker, got his biscuits and called police.

Police arrested Carlos Ayala, 26, at the restaurant. The sheriff's office and the restaurant's management company did not immediately return calls Tuesday seeking further detail.

Deputies said Ayala was carrying a small amount of marijuana, a handgun and about $500.

Ayala often worked the drive-up window, and authorities say he may have been selling marijuana to customers who used the right secret word as a code.

Soccer Player Traded for Shrimp

OSLO, Norway (AP) - Both teams said they got a good catch when striker Kenneth Kristensen switched soccer teams in Norway for about 170 pounds of fresh shrimp.

The local newspaper Faedrelandsvennen said Friday that third-division side Floey in Kristiansand, 187 miles south of Oslo, agreed to pay rival team Vindbjart striker Kristensen's weight in shrimp for the privilege of having him among their forwards.

"Kenneth was very eager to play for Floey, and we didn't want to be difficult. But he was under contract for us, so of course we had to demand some kind of compensation," said Vindbjart club president Vidar Ulstein.

After a brief meeting, Vindbjart's officials decided that the transfer payment would be Kristensen's weight in shrimp.

"No problem, we have enough shrimp," said Floey president Rolf Guttormsen.

The exact amount that Floey will have to pay, will be decided when the two teams meet Saturday. To make sure that they get their due payment, Vindbjart will bring along scales, which Kristensen will mount before the game.

Kristensen scored 14 goals for Floey this season.

Iceman's Last Meal Included Venison

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Iceman, whose 5,000-year-old frozen mummy was discovered in the Alps in 1991, had last meals including venison and wild goat, a team of Italian scientists reports.

The researchers also joined the speculation over his death, suggesting he may have been killed in a dispute among hunters.

"We have analyzed the intestinal content and found compelling evidence that the Iceman was a high-ranked hunter," said Franco Rollo of the University of Camerino.

The Iceman, also known as Oetzi, had an empty stomach at the time of death, researchers found. But by analyzing the contents of his intestines, the team was able report on his final two meals.

Their study appears in Tuesday's issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences ( news - web sites).

Oetzi's body was found frozen in a mountain area, and pollen on the body indicated he had passed through a coniferous woodland on the way there, the researchers said.

During that trip he apparently ate the first of the two meals analyzed. That included meat from an Ibex, a type of wild goat once common in the Alps, plus cereal grains and some type of plant food.

That was followed by a final meal including red deer meat and, possibly, more grains, the Italian team reported.

While other early people included rabbit, squirrel and even packrat in their diets, Oetzi's differed.

"We think, in this view, that it is somehow remarkable that Oetzi obtained his animal proteins from big game only. It adds to the idea that he occupied an elevated social position," Rollo said.

Kathleen Gordon, a physical anthropologist at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, said the findings add to the knowledge of Oetzi and his community Ã¢â‚¬â€ showing that it was a mixed economy including both hunting and farming.

"This, I think, puts a nail in the coffin of the idea the Iceman was a vegetarian," added Gordon, who was not part of the research team. She is currently preparing an exhibit on the Iceman for the Natural History museum.

Oetzi's remains are in the South Tyrol Archaeological Museum in Bolzano, Italy. Two years ago, his body was temporarily thawed for researchers to take samples to study.

Following that, botanist Klaus Oeggl of the University of Innsbruck, Austria, reported on microscopic studies showing that Oetzi's last meal had included unleavened bread made of einkorn, a type of wheat, as well as some greens.

Rollo and his colleagues were able to expand on that finding by extracting DNA from the contents of the intestines and comparing the material to animal, plant and fungal DNA. They found that greens outnumbered cereals, which they say is consistent with hunters who tended to eat what they found or caught rather than carrying quantities of bread with them.

By estimating how fast food moves through the intestines they were able take samples from different areas and report on the two meals.

While little is known about Oetzi himself, he was carrying a bow, a quiver of arrows and a copper ax, leading to speculation that he was a hunter or warrior.

"The finding of Ibex and deer meat certainly strengthens" the likelihood that he was a hunter, the researchers said.

Last year, X-rays revealed that Oetzi was killed by an arrow, with the flint arrowhead remaining in his left shoulder. That has led to speculation ranging from death in battle to ritual killing.

Johan Reinhard, an expert on the mummies found on the mountains of South America, speculated last year that because Oetzi still had his valuable copper ax he may have been killed in some sort of ritual.

In the new paper, the Italian team noted that previous studies have concluded that stone age hunters of deer and wild boar tended to aim their arrows at the animal's left shoulder blade as this gave them the best chance of killing with one shot.

"As the arrow that struck Oetzi actually pierced his left shoulder blade, it seems to us much more reasonable to assume that rather than of a ritual sacrifice, he had been the victim of some rivalry among big game hunters," the researchers say.

Gordon said she tended to agree with the Italians, noting that the Iceman had been shot in the back, perhaps by someone chasing him.

Man Dies After Detergent Mistaken for Hummus

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A 91-year-old Israeli died after his caregiver spread a paste-like dishwashing detergent on his bread instead of hummus, police said on Monday.

The caregiver, who had worked for the old man for five years, told police he could not read the Hebrew writing on the detergent's container and served it up when the man asked for some hummus, a chickpea spread popular in the Middle East.

Police said the caregiver called an ambulance when his employer fell ill on Saturday but the man died in the hospital.

"We are checking to see whether there was criminal intent or whether it was a negligent homicide," a police spokesman said.

Alligator Bites Off Man's Arm at Florida Garden

MIAMI (Reuters) - An 11-foot bull alligator tore off a man's arm and swallowed it at a north Florida botanical garden, wildlife officials said on Tuesday.

Trappers killed the alligator and recovered the severed arm from its stomach but doctors said it was too badly mangled to try reattaching it.

The injured man, Dan Goodman, was listed in fair condition at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida, where he was "in good spirits," a spokeswoman said.

Goodman, 58, is the director of the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens near the north central Florida city of Gainesville.

He was weeding a lily pond on Monday, standing in about 4 feet of water, when he apparently stepped on the 392-pound male alligator, Capt. Roy Brown of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

The alligator "lunged up and grabbed ahold of his right arm and severed it just below the elbow," Brown said.

Goodman climbed out of the pond and shouted for a co-worker, who took off his shirt and fashioned it into a tourniquet to help stanch the bleeding until paramedics arrived.

Trappers harpooned the alligator and hoisted it to the bank, where a sheriff's deputy shot it in the head with a 12-gauge shotgun and killed it, Brown said.

"I physically slit the alligator open, reached in, and I could feel the victim's arm in the stomach," Brown told Reuters by phone. "I was able to sever the stomach and pull the victim's arm out."

The arm was recovered about 90 minutes after the attack, he said. Paramedics took it to the hospital but it was too badly damaged to be reattached.

WILD ALLIGATOR NAMED MO-JO

Goodman will need hospital care for at least several more days, said Dr. Larry Chidgey, who operated on him.

"The biggest risk now is infection," Chidgey told a news conference. "He will need additional surgery to try and make sure there are no other dead tissues present that could lead to infection."

He said Goodman was alert enough to describe the attack when he arrived at the hospital.

"He did recall that the alligator obviously grabbed his arm, there was a twisting type action," the doctor said.

The alligator was a wild alligator that lived at a nearby pond and occasionally wandered into the lily pond at the botanical garden, where workers called it Mo-Jo.

Goodman told wildlife officials he did not see the alligator until it attacked.

They said the alligator might have mistaken Goodman's splashing the pond for that of a duck or wading bird, their natural prey. Because it was used to being around people, it had probably lost its natural fear of humans, Brown said.

Signs posted around the gardens warn people to watch out for alligators.

Florida wildlife officials have documented 300 alligator attacks on humans, 12 of them fatal, since they began keeping records in 1948. Brown estimated Florida's alligator population at 1 million.

"When you say Florida, that's almost synonymous with alligators," he said.

What's the big deal with people catching sharks? More people are killed each year by falling coconuts than sharks eating people. Why the hell is cruelty to animals so mixed up with ignorance? Well, I see your point. But then again the way chickens and ducks and cows and cute rabbits are killed for food isn't exactly pretty either. Nothing being killed is pretty. But then again I only eat shark's fin once a year (sometimes once in two years) during special celebrations, so it's not like I consume lots of it. It's just not affordable.

I see your point too. It's true that nothing being killed is pretty, and it's probably good that you don't consume lots of it, since it's so expensive. (Plus some one mentioned it has mercury ) ^ . ^.

I'm not really sure I understand the coconuts in relation to sharks. The big deal is that people are killing way too many sharks, thus pushing them closer to extinction. Besides, would you like some one to grab you and chop of your... ear, let's say, then drop you? And I'm not sure who excatly the illiterate peasant comment is directed to, but if it's too me (which I suppose it is), I'm replying to your message, which indicates I read it, which indicates that I am not, in fact, illiterate.
