So I've been reading some of the threads here, and this seems to be an intelligent community... or at least you have good taste in computer games. Anyway, I thought it would be interesting/fun to get your thoughts on communism.

And just for the record, I'm not a communist...

    ...yet

I was going to write something highly intelligent and constructive that would span for several pages (or something witty/funny), but I'll be content by saying that all communist states that exist and have existed have been terrible tyrannies and, put simply, nasty places to live in. According to some, none of these states have achieved true communism, but that says more about communism as an unattainable utopia than anything else.

Communism is this really nifty idea, but it conveniently ignores the fact that people are greedy, conniving bastards, who really don't care all that much about each other.

Face it, the main goal behind democracy is to provide a safeguard against the worst fuckups and/or power-hungry untrustworthy bastards in your government. Even at this, it isn't always perfect, but it gets the job done well enough.

The problem with communism is that it's hard to implement a safeguard like this. Combining democratic safeguards AND still having a government that acts "for the benefit of the whole" and has a tight leash on *everything*, people are generally tempted to vote for a "have the government leave me a lone a bit more, the guy next door is crippled so why should he make more money than I do?" approach.

I still believe in a strong(er) state with certain essential things managed from that (health care, infrastructure, safety, energy supply, education, social security) but right now it needs to be coupled to democratic control, as that's the only real safeguard we have; and that automatically results in a system where complete communism, where everything is state-controlled, can never be achieved.

Also, if we were to abandon a market economy structure, it would hamper innovation and human ambition; let's face it, the drive to do something with your life is a lot lower if you know you won't actually make more money than the guy next door collecting garbage. Of course, this could be replaced by some government-controlled reward scheme, but that brings us back to the democratic-control-problem: the majority of people would have the notion that they'd be treated unfairly.

I think the color scheme of this forum fits in nicely with a discussion about communism... Not to imply anything about the color scheme or anything.

I'd like to live in a true communistic society. But since that isn't going to happen I'll just move into the woods and arm myself when I finish school. So I won't have to endure all the people/parts of society I don't like/.

If the palace is meant for the dear leader they definitely do. Kim Jong Il has, if I recall correctly, seven of them beauties. And of course the proletariat can't have palaces, what were you thinking? They're there to provide for the leader's palace!
