Obviously, Mark Hamill should play the role of a Sith Luke Skywalker.

As i recall, according to some fan-fic or a legitimate story, after the events on the return of the jedi, luke skywalker becomes the sith padawan of a reborn palpatine, i think the article on the wookiepedia says something about that.
On a side note, today, when talking to a friend, the rumor of justin bieber in the main role came about.
    Please don't disney.

He would be great as a main character.

There's actual canon after the events of the Star Wars movies that is covered in books, found here (all the stuff from The New Republic onwards). Though I guess Disney aren't obliged to stick to this material anyway.

In other words, if Disney follows the canon, mainstream critics will call it an unimaginative re-tread of existing material, and if they don't follow the canon then all the fanboys will cry foul. I guess they're screwed either way, which is a shame because I think Star Wars actually fits well within the Disney milieu. It's a kind of clean-cut adventure series that can be enjoyed by both children and their parents, which is what Disney typically specialises in. A darker tone wouldn't really suit it. You can't imagine a Star Wars film directed by Tim Burton where it's all gritty and... slightly surreal... and... uh...

Okay, that sounds awesome. Screw the milieu, I want Tim Burton to direct these things.

I hope you realise though if that happened Johnny Depp would be cast as the Luke Skywalker equivalent character? Not something I'd been keen on.

I'd like to see them start with the Old Republic as I mentioned, then end with the whole Darth Bane turning the Sith Lords into a duo; it would cover some interesting parts of the setting which aren't touched upon in the present films.

I ended up reading somewhere that the new movies are set about 30 years after Return of the Jedi, and according to lore that's come out over the years - Luke's the head of the New Jedi Order, has kids, and so does Leia (but not with each other {though I'm sure if Lucas had a hand in it, episode 5 would be a hint at the kids' heritage}). And like anyone unaware of the meaning "balance," Luke is surprised to hear there's a splinter of the Empire still alive, and that it might be headed by a clone of Palpatine.

So, uh, why is there fire coming out of a laser pistol? I also like the fact that they all have scopes, even if no one uses them.

If they follow the Star Wars canon, critics probably won't actually have the knowledge necessary to brand them as rehashes of the novels. If they did, they'd praise the reimagining of said literature.

Since the sequel novels aren't bad as a whole, they should try to follow along with them if at all possible.

Joss Whedon, I heard, has a six movie contract with Disney. We know 2 of them are for Avengers 1 and 2, but the other 4 aren't currently known. I sincerely hope that Joss gets to write and direct the new Star Wars trilogy because I think Nathan Fillion and Robert Downey Jr. would be the best jedi duo in ever!

You may be onto something there Magikarp. They would be an amazing Jedi duo indeed.

Did not Palpatine had two or three clones or something? If I remember correctly, he desperately tried to take over the body of Darth Vader's youngest grandchild, the infant Anakin Solo as well. That would be interesting.

It would also allow the return of Jake Lloyd to the big screen. Something that I'm sure would be eagerly anticipated by fans.

Few people remember the Ewok adventures, technically the fourth and fifth of the star wars movies. Compared to Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure, I don't think Disney could sink the franchise any lower.

Besides, the animated Clone Wars are far and away more sophisticated and professional than any of the orignal movies, so I have more faith in the entertainment industry per se than in Lucas in his dotage.

It's possible this move may revive that part of my childhood which died when Jar Jar was born.

I still can remember the Ewoks adventures and alas, it horrified me. You'll never forget this infantile excuse of a movie. (Not that it was hunting in my dreams though.)
