    True, true.

I can see a problem with that though - mages wearing two shields. To avoid abuse, forcing mages to keep one hand free when casting spells is the only way to go. The relative freedom of holding a weapon should, of course, be available (can't have mages without staves can we?) but dual shields is just a big no-no for your average sorceror.

Dual shields could otherwise be a good idea. Like if you've got a mission to escort someone through hostile areas, then it might be a good idea to keep this person well-defended, especially if he/she doesn't have much to come up with in a close fight.

    Agreed! All hail!

Actually, I was talking abuot both. I aquired a BM avatar from someone (he drew it...) and then I modified it to be a spell caster. I then got introduced to 8-bit theatre and started using HADOKEN! and stabity death...

ha ha!! good for you!! I'm glad to see I'm not the only fellow who reads Nuklear Power!! :) and I think my favorite combo weapon-wise would be a high-power revolver in my right hand (dominant) and a defense-dagger (a dagger ALMOST as long as a short-sword, but designed to defend). :)

i vote they 1)make dual wielding a skill, or 2)add a special class that can dual wield(like the barbarian in diablo 2) :)
:akimbo: and dual pistol wielding for dwarfs

Piece of advice - try not to answer old posts. We call it 'gravedigging' and some people don't like it. However, in this forum it isn't so bad, your post was meaningful and it needed a revival, so...
I have already stated that it could be made a skill. As for your second point, there are no classes per se in Arcanum; the nearest thing would be a background. Which could be, but there would have to be disadvantages to balance it.
The dwarf thing would be really unfair, though...

Your neighbor is right. But it's not so much that you'd actually hurt yourself while dual-wielding, but your accuracy is reduced tremendously. It's like shooting from the hip. Because the two pistols are a shoulder-space apart, aiming is almost impossible. The only way to dual-wield with any sort of accuracy would be to hold both pistols together extended in a line from your sternum, and that just looks stupid. Still, muzzle control would be an issue. That's why the correct (Weaver) stance is with your legs spread, and both hands on the weapon.
While it sounds ridiculous, dual-wielding shotguns is actually more effective than pistols. As long as the weapons are loaded with buckshot and you are at fairly close range, you are pretty sure to hit something. Although you'd think the kickback would break your arms, it's actually less painful than the standard position, because your bent elbows absorb the shock, of course resulting in tremendous muzzle climb. I know all this because I've done it. Of course, it's still extremely impractical, because you have to shift your grip to rack the forends after each shot. When freewebs starts working again, I'll link a picture of me and my brother-in-law dual-wielding shotguns.

EDIT: Whoops, I just replied not only to an ancient post, but a post on page one of an ancient thread. Wasn't paying attention, my bad.

    will this thread ever die????

But yeah, speaking of the whole shotgun thing, it reminds me of back when i was in the boy scouts (14 yrs old) and we told this prick that firing a shotgun (we were skeet shooting in texas(which was where we lived)) didnt hurt so much if you held the butt a few inches from your shoulder before firing... We were such cruel children...

I agree to both parts of that; a good balance for the background would be either a beauty/ charisma penalty or lowered intelligence (i.e. part of a gang or something) and as to dwarfs :/ id say give them a slight penalty to a couple tech skills :dead: like repair, etc.

I'm guessing that it flew out of his hands right? Not a very smart thing to do.
Yeah, buckshot. double ot is supposed to be the most effective.
They say it's like having 12 9mm bullets shot at you at once with just one shot of it.
Hey Sigurd, how many guns do you own? Just curious.

That is cruel, but of course hilarious. For those who haven't fired a shotgun, the effect of such a stance would be the butt slamming into your shoulder with incredible force, producing pain and quite a bruise.

Unfortunately, only two shotguns right now. But that's only because I haven't had enough extra money to buy more lately. My next goal is an Armalite AR-50, the sniper rifle with "the stock shaped like a machine rest." The ads are funny.

I was told the very same thing by my brother the first time I fired my fathers' hunting rifle. It uses 30-06 ammunition (7,62x63 mm). It kicked me pretty good, it did...

Hey, that's what older brothers are for, making their kid brothers tougher. By the way, how are the gun control laws over there in Sweden?

Hehe...you know what they say about 30-06's? They get meat on both sides of the barrel. Meaning that it kicks like a horse.
A 12 gauge 3½ mag turkey load isn't that fun to shoot either. One shot and it gives you a head-ache. They call em "Grand Slams".

Well, since I'm a citizen in a socialist republic and as such leave all the thinking to the state, I don't have such a keen grasp of our gun control laws, but I can tell you this - they are stricter than yours. For all I know, you can't own a weapon unless you need it, which is why most guns owned are hunting rifles. You can't have an automatic weapon unless in special cases either - so you can't have a M60 hanging above the fireplace in case the supreme leadership of your glorious government would fail to please you. Oh, and did you know that you have to keep the gun dissassembled and locked up so nobody can steal it? That's kind of important, and violation of that might lead to deportation for failing to obey your sovereign state.

All in all, the process of owning a gun is more cumbersome and regulated here than over there. But we have less shootings and such nasty stuff than you guys, so I guess I like this system better...*

*So, did I say that because that's the way I felt or because I wanted to avoid labour camp, huh?

Whew! Eye feel sorry for you. I have a little .22 in reaching distance right now. Are you jealous? If Eye'm really in the mood to get you mad eye could walk over to my closet and grab all my guns. Eye have enough 12 gauge shotgun shells in my closet to start a war. Does that comfort you? Ah, labor camp isn't that bad. :p

Haha, like music in my ears. I never realized being annoying could be that much fun.

Going back to the gun discussion... it really can't be safe having those loose weapons laws. Fuck, I just spoke to Matt_Thorn/Silvio Arjunza.

    He owns:

    A 22 Rifle.

    A 44 Mag (I suppose he means a .44 Magnum)

    A 12 Shotgun

Two BB guns (weapons for kids? What the fuck?)

Do you guys call it safe that he can legally walk around with that?

What's wrong with weapons for kids? Part of the concept of a BB gun is to teach a child proper gun safety. Why is education the answer for everything, except guns? No, with guns you just take them away. Sigurd advises that one should just skip over the BB guns and go straight to the live ordinance. My younger brothers, aged 8 and 10, have been firing shotguns for over a year now, and will continue doing so for the rest of their lives. They know what a gun can do, because they've used them, therefore they aren't just going to play with them and accidentily shoot somebody. The whole "Guns are dangerous" argument pertaining to accidental shooting is like saying that since cars are dangerous, people shouldn't be able to use them, or the same thing with knives, power tools, etc. No. Teach the kids how to use these important tools safely, and it's far less likely that they will abuse them.
