Geez, Sleek_Jeek, I started to look at that at work and my boss nearly saw my screen. You could have warned us that it was risqué.

I'm getting nervous with all these links around.

Who was it who hid a picture of an obsese old woman naked, upside down in a bathtub having explosive diarrhoea on her own face? Because that one scarred me in the 1/8th if a second in which I saw it, and I'm not clicking any more links.

Inasmuch as "having one's shit together" can be accepted as hotter than what she has going for her now, I support this view. Still, having-your-shit-together-because-you're-15-and-are-not-old-enough-to-manage-your-own-shit-so-other-people-are-keeping-your-shit-together-for-you is kind of like plastic surgery for the teenage soul. Does one compliment the ventriloquist or his dummy? Were you finding Miley hot back in the days when she had it together or by extension were you finding her glorified zookeepers hot?

The last time Sinead O'Connor was relevant in a conversational sense, Miley Cyrus had barely been born. How far back did Cyrus have to dig to even be aware of O'Connor to mock her publicly? That would be like me taking a dig at Ray Harryhausen for jerky special effects. I shouldn't even know who that person is, let alone have something against him.

While we're gratuitously sharing our favorite shit shows, here is mine. (citation)

By the way, I came in like a wrecking ball.

I always though she sang "... come in like a rainbow".

Now, that makes even less sense. Tiny water droplets and refracted light does not seem very romantic, nor increase your changes of reproduction.

The music video might have turned out more interesting, though.

Nice. I feel better knowing that Miley's tweet wasn't some random act of passive aggression. Sinead O'Connor kind of opened herself up to that.

TYT are so solid. Thanks for the edification, Dark Elf.

    Re:

Still it sucks that Sinead thinks its ok to slut-shame, but not as much as it sucks that Miley needed to mock her history of mental illness. I'm not sure which one is the bigger cry baby. I'm all for nudity in art, it's been around as long as art has been around. In fact I'd venture to guess that nudity in art has existed longer than clothing. On the other hand it's extremely shameful that society perpetuates this odd standard that allows the dismissal of an idea or statement as long as you let everyone know that it's originator needed psychiatric help at one time or another.

Miley is more in the wrong for overreacting about Sinéad's letter. Still, she has the right to do whatever the fuck she wants with her body and yatta yatta.

In another frame of mind, I may put forth the effort to investigate what you mean by O'Connor's slut shaming, but at the moment I cannot be bothered. I feel that a key component of shame is broad, public awareness of whatever is being ridiculed, and O'Connor removed that element when she sent a private letter to Cyrus. Cyrus took it live. I haven't read O'Connor's letter (again, cannot be bothered) and she may have very well have drawn first blood with it, but Cyrus is the one who brought it to the Colloseum.

The Sinead/Miley thing started when Miley said she was aping O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U" with the "Wrecking Ball" video.

    http://www.independent.ie/entertain...onnor-inspired-for-latest-video-29628603.html

SO got calls for a quote and instead penned the letter to MC, which I didn't read as slut-shaming so much as, "Girl, quit letting a bunch of grody men dictate your shit."

Miley Cyrus is a product. Is she even a person? Right now she is someone who makes fun of the mentally ill so she loses in my estimation (which I'm sure she cares about greatly). Of course the inverse should be my reaction - someone who needs to put down the mentally ill to feel better clearly needs some love and compassion.

And the guy who did the videos and those photos? Jesus Christ, what a skeevemaster. They're going to find kiddie porn on his computer someday.

    Re: Re:

Unfortunately that is not what she did. The letter wasn't even sent, it was merely published to her personal website. http://www.sineadoconnor.com/2013/10/op ... ley-cyrus/

This type of act leads me to believe that it is addressing Sinead O'connor fans more than it is addressing Miley Cyrus. I think the main issue is that it is more shocking to the public at large than anything else. Miley's actions are no different from those of other recent pop stars like Rihana. In my opinion whole trend of hypersexuality partially a result of stripping and the cultural impact of the sex industry on the outlooks of young people during an economic recession. There are many questions to be asked about such a trend and its implications but its impact on society is not what's being discussed, which is why I bring up slut shaming.

    What is slut shaming? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slut-shaming
I would say that Sinead publicly criticizing Miley's wrecking ball video could fall under the category of slut shaming. -edit- Specifically in the sense that it describes her as a commodity being sold, specifically her body. The main focus of Sinead's criticism is Miley's expression of her sexuality in music videos and live performances. This sexuality is most obviously expressed through provocative clothing and dance moves so by this logic her criticism falls under wikipedia's definition of slut shaming.

If anyone is interested in hearing a more mundane account of public slut-shaming I'd direct your attention to this 12 minute podcast. http://truestorytime.org/kissing-chamoco-redux/

Well, I'm watching Miley right this very moment on SNL and she just sang, "Only God can judge ya," so really all our musings are moot.

Then again, right after she sang that she went "do da do doo dee do beep boop" so who effin knows, man.

ps. I just read the letter again and I still don't read it as slut-shaming, but this is possibly because I agree with a lot of her points. That being said, her second missive to Ms. Cyrus really didn't help her case.

I'm not discussing whether or not the letter is or isn't slut shaming, it IS slut shaming. It is unsolicited public criticism of a young woman for expressing her sexuality against the expectations of current social norms. This is irrefutable.

    However...

I'm not saying I'd want my daughter prancing around naked on construction equipment...

... but at the same time it is not my place to tell Miley Cyrus what is right or wrong for her to do with herself. In fact I don't think it's wrong for a 20 year old woman to be expressive of her sexuality through her artwork. It tells a story, and to me that story is this - in the post recession atmosphere young women struggle against ephemeral dreams of fiscal opportunity embodied by a stripper pole.

I can't speak to the morality of the songs, or the person delivering the lyrics, but I do see the art as being complete in theme and I believe it is a valuable expression of North American culture.

I am honestly not trying to pick a fight or mock, but is this a real sentiment?

Also, Sinead was asked repeatedly for comment on "Wrecking Ball" due to Cyrus' assertions that her look and video were based on her so unsolicited to MC though her comments might have been - she was asked, she answered.

Does it adhere to your Wikipedia definition of slut-shaming? I suppose so but definitions and intent are not always the same thing.

Sure, Miley should be able to do whatever she wants and swing around naked. However, that doesn't mean that people can't discuss the ramifications to how female sexuality is portrayed, how it affects the tweenage girls who look up to her, etc. And people should be able to do this without being dismissed as slut-shamers and FREE MILEY and whatnot.

I'm shocked the "Leave Britney Alone" video star hasn't resurfaced for this one.

    :p

Yes it is a real sentiment. I need to stress that I don't think of it as something I'm extremely excited about, but it's there and it works and it's significant.
