In America I believe you could use the railway, but you would have to pay fees to the company that owned the rails. I assume where you come from the question is whether the state rails are public or if they are government use only.

Agreed. That's the way it works in the US. And, of course, right-of-way goes to whoever owned the tracks you were leasing.

 

Pretty sure this particular situation isn't really an example of Deus ex Machina at all. The mysterious 55 poster is not resolving or fixing a problem at the last minute or with any sense of suspension of disbelief.

Not trying to be nit-picky, but little things like this bother me. Such as when people say "I literally shit my pants!" when they, in fact, did not shit their pants at all.

This sort of post is exactly why I shouldn't post at like 2am local time.

 

Deus ex Machina literally translated to 'God in the Machine'. Not sure when it became the phrase used for really poor plot twists, but it originally referred to the rapidly increasing complexity of technology.

(And this post is why people should do their research before they piss me off. I get clever at them.)

 

Uh, what? That expression has been used to mean cheap plot twists since antiquity... the "god from a machine" in question referred to a plot device used by Greek playwrights whereby a complicated or messy plot would be resolved by having a god appear from nowhere and solving everything (the machine was the one used to lower the actor playing the god into the stage).

 

As an actor, I second what Silvara said, as I was about to say the same thing.

Though, the irony burns my insides like a fire. I'm not sure HOW you figured that Deus ex Machina had any correlation to the rapidly increasing complexity of technology, especially since it's Latin, and in times when people used Latin in day-to-day conversation the most complex machines were catapults. Deus ex Machine is currently, always has been, and always will be a way to describe a sucky plot twist.

Also, even by your definition, I don't see how frosted is a Deus ex Machina. It makes no sense to me. He's a technology rapidly increasing in complexity?

It'd be truly an awesome idea to apply this concept to the fast spread of technology in Arcanum, though.
