Hi everybody, may I ask you which operating system are you using (to play Arcanum)?

Is it Linux (+Wine)? Windows? both of them? Mac or some other? (if its even possible) Please specify name, version and service pack. For example "OpenSuse v11.1" or "Windows XP - SP3".

I actually "need" to know that to determine a priority of operating system support for OpenArcanum project. At this moment its: Windows, Linux, Mac.

Your post may reorder this priority list.

    Thank you very much.
    Have a nice day. :D

    Windows Vista 32 bit.

Edited because apparently, I can't spell "Windows" right.

Arch 64bit w. WINE when it wants to work (newer versions seems to have degraded *a lot* in stability if you ask me).

Prioritise for Windows, the vast majority of gamers use it and us linux users can probably just run it through wine anyway.

Or, even better - use cross-platform libraries, use platform agnostic code only (no #pragma's or windows-specific code without a preprocesser check and a suitable linux equivalent). Then you just compile for both OS's come release time (could quite easily automate this depending on your IDE also) It's easier than it sounds.

Win7 x32/x64 (former on laptop, latter on desktop).

I don't regret moving on from XP.

I run Gentoo Linux 64bit. Please make it run natively on Linux using cross-platform libraries. Wine Is Not rEal solution. Doing this will also open doors to porting the game on many other platforms later on -- a good example of this is GemRB http://gemrb.sourceforge.net/wiki/doku.php?id=start#gemrb.

I hate to rag on the linux users, but I think a majority of users are most likely W7/Vista users... I see way more requests for help running Arcanum on Vista/W7 than I do Linux.

    To darkuttek and Valthar:
Sorry guys, I can't count your votes, because it's your first post, so I can't be sure that you are different person. I rather want to see posts from long-time members, that's why I did not started voting pool...

    To everybody else:
Thank you very much for your info, I appreciate that a lot.

I'm developing it under Windows XP Pro - SP3, so it should run fine on that, and its been already tested on my notebook, which runs on Windows 7 - Pro, so no problem with that either.

I did not yet tested it on Vista, since I don't have it installed, even I own license for that too. But before I release OpenArcanum, I'll install it and test it on Vista, so you can be sure that it will run fine for you too.

(btw, I'm really surprised how many people still use Vista)

For Linux users: Sorry, but as you can see, the current priority is Windows. However, I'll test it on Wine too, and tweak it if needed, so you will be able to run it under Wine without any problems.

    Thank you again.
    Have a nice day, everybody.

P.S.: There is also similar project, the Arcanum: Revolution, which is aimed for Linux users: http://blog.arcanumnet.ru/

Well yeah, I can certainly understand the reasoning, even if I'm sorry for the decision made not to build the program with libraries compatible on different platforms. But if this port is primarily directed at people staying on these particular forums, then it's okay -- having followed for some time your project had been hoping for it to be for also those people not that involved on these boards.

Guess I have to start learning Russian then :/

ps. I admit, I linked this topic to linux gaming boards to show other people interested in this game that there was something going on. But as that was mostly due to me misunderstanding your goal, I apologize.

    WinXP Pro SP3

I'm thinking about using Win7 on desktop and setting up a WinXP Pro SP3 server.

Their IP's are unique to them, but I can't be bothered to hunt down the ranges and compare.
