As some of you may be aware this is my favourite thread:

    viewtopic.php?f=16&t=12518

Well I was feeling nostalgic and wondered if I could track down Trossy and ridicule him some more. That is currently a distant hope but I have made some progress in tracking the other person listed in that thread:

A quick Google search for 'Amy webmuseart' found this:

    http://www.zoominfo.com/p/Amy-Lewis/188281059

The way back machine has not proved overly fruitful in this search as the webmuseart site has no entries after 2003, a full 3 years before the thread was posted and the other website listed in her profile is blocked with the Robot Exclusion Standard so there are no entries, WhoIs proved a dead lead as well. However I did find a screenshot showing Amy did keep the site updated until 2008:

    http://www.screenshots.com/webmuseart.com/2008-05-21

A few of these screenshots clearly state that it is a PERSONAL website so if the mysterious Amy was a web designer then a larger net had to be cast. So back to Google for a simple search of 'Amy Lewis web design' and we had a hit! Two hits in fact:

http://www.amylewisdesign.com.au/ - A web design company owned and run by an Amy Lewis
http://au.linkedin.com/pub/amy-lewis/13/ba1/710 - Her LinkedIn account stating that the company was started in 2005 which fits nicely in our time frame.

Also DE and I have a theory that there is a higher chance that you will like Arcanum if you are Australian or Scandinavian so her being Australian backs that up a little more.

I've not yet garnered enough interest to actually email her and ask if she is the real Amy and if she could point us at Trossy but it seems to fit together and goes to show that if you put something on the internet it really is forever.

I wasn't going to share this, but I note that he is a John Howard fan so fuck him.

P.S., he signed his name Colin Tross and that's the only one on facebook, and he's aussie. It took me about five seconds, so perhaps I'm missing something.

Tracking someone down from about 8 years ago just to ridicule him? I don't know if I should be frightened or in awe.

When it's done to celebrities and politicians, it's a scandal. When it's done to a private citizen, it's creepy.

Facebook must have been designed with stalkers in mind.

You didn't miss anything other than my absolute refusal to use Facebook.

I'm always curious about this, you and if I remember correctly Philes, don't use Facebook. Don't get me wrong, I don't like Facebook and I wouldn't use it if I didn't have to, but for convenience it's massively useful.

Do jobs/home situations just not call for it? I often have to use Facebook to coordinate or take part in group work easily which I've assigned to, which I'd imagine happens in most work environments too. Also both my brothers and their wives tend to use each other's phones interchangeably - Facebook is massively useful at Christmas or with a birthday to communicate with one or the other in terms of present buying. Clandestine calls or texts can obviously be made, but why bother when there's a free and easy alternative?

Being a social hermet has it's advantages Jojo.

I cut myself from Facebook for many reasons about 4 years ago and haven't regretted it once. If your job situation requires Facebook and you're aren't in some kind of marketing position then you have the kind of job that you don't deserve or you aren't working hard enough.

Socially it's a little trickier. My friends all know I don't use it, so we often have to *gasp* TALK ON THE PHONE or text to get shit solidified. My regular Wednesday Eurogaming group just sorta shows up. The social aspect is a double edged sword though. For every problem it creates, the problem of not having to deal with morons/family members (who are not mutally exclusive) and their stupid pictures and "friend" drama is worth it.

Cost? You already have a phone, yeah? Are you ready to replace it with Facebook entirely? No? Then to me there's no cost to use it over Facebook. Also, I'm rich as fuck so I don't care either way.

It's only convenient because everybody else is already using it, not because it's inherently useful on it's own. I've already gotten a few of my friends to delete their account (though you technically can't, ha!) once they discovered how communication used to be from being "forced" to interact with me outside of Facebook.

I simply googled his name from the post and was directed straight to his home page, I didn't start from facebook.

I 'deleted' my facebook account some time ago, partly by your example, Philes, but then I recently made a new one, the day after the federal election, because I wanted to step out into the street and start arguing and that was the next best thing. I'm in it for the grassroots politics, and the hivemind.

Also, we are the Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

I don't use Facebook because I have no reason to. I don't have a wide circle of friends, and I have no desire to keep in touch with my peers from school or university.

    Re:

No I know steering clear of it definitely has its advantages, and while my job situation doesn't require it per se it makes it so much easier to ask simple questions about my course which our course-leaders often neglect to tell us about - at the same time I cushion myself from the risk of looking like a fool by asking them directly (no one likes to ask superiors dumb questions, at the same time it usually is the case that they've neglected to put online vital course information because they are terribly mismanaged, so in this instance I can just ask my peers and avoid any personal risk either way). It's also advantageous in that I don't have to trouble people for their phone number if I want to get in touch with them, which seems like a more personal tie unless you genuinely want to socialise with them - which for the most part I don't.

Beyond that, I don't really use Facebook - I would always rather call or text a family as it seems more personal. I also don't agree with how it is used almost universally, I couldn't really say why though - it just seems a little creepy.

I recently found out I was fortunate enough to miss my 10 year High School reunion because the girl organising it was not able to find me on Facebook, that was validation enough for 10 years of abstinence.

Well, I hate Facebook, but my studies force me to use it, much to my dismay:

Firstly, I get to edit my school's magazine, however, the dumbfuck, lower-than-monkey skilled, shit for brains illiterate, and generally unpleasant schoolmates canĀ“t find another way to pass over their low quality, horribly written articles, even though I've made not a small amount of reasonable suggestions.

Teachers nowadays seem also fond of linking articles via FB, my director even asked me recently to write a chronicle of my times at school and do so on FB!

Regardless of how many times I find myself forced to use the dreadful social network, I'll never stop despising it...

...Yet sometimes, with and thanks to ytzk's find, we cand stumble upon small gold mines like...

That's sound stupid. Really stupid. The only thing about school we have on FB is the student groups, but articels and such are passed over by email, dropbox or teh University site.

It's nice to know that at least you're with civilized individuals.

Half of my schoolmates have no email and I only know of one that has had contact with Dropbox; my brother, and damn me, he's stupid using it!

wat? Dont have emai? Don't you need one to sign up for facebook? And we are provided with an email from the school (basically everyone in Sweden are given a school mail from, about high school?) and it was because of my teacher I was forced to learn dropbox.

Well, if everywhere were Sweden, we'd be okay.

Last year the course coordinator at university made a point of saying they're old fashioned, so they use email to contact students.

I was bemused, because I still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea, let alone email, but it turns out kids expect a facebook group for everything nowadays.
